SPECIAL VISIT BY CAROL THATCHER

NOVEMBER 2009 - On Saturday, 21st November more than 200 members and guests gathered in the Grand Hall at Bishops Hill Adult Education Centre, Hutton, and were entertained by Carol Thatcher (daughter of Baroness Margaret Thatcher), who gave a talk on what her life has been like as the daughter of England's first woman Prime Minister. Her talk covered many aspects of her life including her stint as a journalist in Australia, and she was more than happy to answer all questions, which ranged from her experiences in the world of entertainment including the widely publicised use of the word golliwog in the "One Show," and her triumph in the jungle challenge programme "I'm a Celebrity get me out of Here." She had many nostalgic tales about her father and of course many anecdotes involving her famous mum. She spoke and generously answered questions for more than an hour. Everybody who attended agreed that Carol is a warm and friendly person, a natural entertainer and that the afternoon was a great success. Thanks are due to Diane Bonny, our Speakers Secretary, who over the past months has been engaged in arranging this somewhat unique occasion in Brentwood U3A's history. I was privileged to meet her at Shenfield Station, and take her to lunch prior to the talk. I was concerned that with just her and I it might be difficult to entertain her during lunch, but I needn't have worried there was never a dull moment! (Report Brian Leith.
